At 6:26 a.m., officers observed Juan Maldonado on his bicycle on the 2500 block of Pacific Avenue, Atlantic City police said. Maldonado had an active warrant out for his arrest, stemming from a shooting on Saturday, Aug. 17, on the 100 block of north Georgia Avenue that wounded a man, police said. The victim sustained a non-life-threatening injury, police said.
Upon seeing officers, Maldonado attempted to flee on his bike, police said. After he was apprehended, Maldonado actively resisted arrest and was attempting to reach towards his waistband area before the officers were able to get him in custody, police said. A loaded handgun was found in the area where he was reaching, police said. Maldonado was also in possession of five bags of heroin, police said.
Maldonado was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of hollow-point ammunition, possession of a large capacity magazine, possession of a defaced firearm, possession of CDS, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice.
Three officers were treated for minor injuries, police said.
